Nicole Porter '94

Having spent her formative years at Halifax Grammar School, Nicole Porter understood the importance of giving her children the same experience. With one in junior primary, twins in grade 1 and her eldest in grade 3, they are just beginning to forge their own path.

"An investment in Halifax Grammar School is a direct investment in developing the next generation of Canadian innovators and leaders. It means fostering a richer Canada."

"I sent them to Grammar School to flourish and grow. The teachers are excellent mentors. They gently guide the little ones. They teach the fundamentals in reading, writing, arithmetic and science, while inspiring curiosity and a sense of wonder. There is a wonderful focus on fostering awareness of their local and global surroundings – be it through community involvement in volunteerism, field trips or discussion of current events.

For Nicole, raising four children as a single mother, she wants to ensure balance and happiness in her children.

"The key is instilling a sense of independence and self-efficacy, but not at the expense of compassion, kindness and a sense of duty to give back. I like the balance the school has. I like the academic challenge but I also like the idea that they are giving back to community. Kids don’t become spoiled. They learn that life isn’t always as fortunate for a lot of people in the world. It really awakens a sense of ethics and compassion and doing for others."

Through her own gift to the Engaging Excellence campaign, Nicole hopes to see advancements in the math and science programs and to ensure an environment free of bullying where the focus is on creating strong and compassionate learners.
